WE’RE HIRING

AM Line Cook

Maya Congee Cafe · Brooklyn · AM shifts · Weekends required

Maya Congee Cafe is looking for a line cook to join our morning/lunch kitchen team.

We’re looking for someone who genuinely enjoys cooking and wants to build their skills in a professional kitchen. This is a hands-on position working with congee, braises, sauces, eggs, vegetables, banh mi, and other dishes rooted in Asian cooking.

The role

You’ll work primarily during our AM and lunch service, helping with:

  • Daily prep and mise en place
  • Working the line during service
  • Cooking and finishing dishes to order
  • Preparing and maintaining sauces, toppings, proteins, vegetables, and other components
  • Following recipes and established methods carefully
  • Keeping your station organized, clean, and ready for service
  • Communicating clearly with the rest of the team
  • Helping with opening, breakdown, cleaning, and kitchen upkeep
  • Learning Maya’s food and helping us maintain consistency as we grow

We’re looking for someone who

  • Has professional kitchen or line-cook experience
  • Is available to work weekends
  • Enjoys cooking and wants to continue developing as a cook
  • Is comfortable working at a steady pace during service
  • Can follow recipes and systems while still developing good kitchen instincts
  • Is organized, clean, and attentive to detail
  • Takes responsibility for their station and their work
  • Communicates clearly and works well as part of a small team
  • Is dependable and takes their schedule seriously
  • Is physically comfortable with the demands of kitchen work
  • Is curious about food and interested in learning

We’re especially interested in meeting someone who sees a future for themselves in food – whether that means becoming a stronger line cook, learning more about prep and recipe development, or eventually taking on greater responsibility in a kitchen.

Location: Brooklyn, NY
Schedule: AM / lunch shifts
Weekends: Required
Position: Part-time or 2-4 days a week.

To apply, please email mayacongeecafe@gmail.com with your name, a little about your kitchen experience, your weekend availability, and what interests you about working at Maya.

Evening Host — Bed-Stuy

Sunday–Wednesday evenings · Part-time · 5-hour solo shifts

Have a day job but miss working with people?

Want to spend one or two evenings a week somewhere warm, lively, and hands-on?

Maya Congee Cafe in Bed-Stuy is looking for an evening host who is comfortable running the room independently.

This is not a traditional host position. During a five-hour shift, you will be responsible for opening the restaurant, welcoming and serving guests, assembling and warming food, maintaining the dining room and kitchen, and closing the house.

It is a great fit for someone who already has a job or other daytime commitment and wants a meaningful, hands-on evening role a few nights a week.

What you’ll do

  • Open and prepare the restaurant for service
  • Welcome guests and help them settle in
  • Guide guests through our set menus and answer questions
  • Take orders and serve food and drinks
  • Assemble and plate food beautifully according to our recipes
  • Warm and finish food for service
  • Keep the dining room, counter, and kitchen clean and organized throughout the evening
  • Notice what needs to be done without waiting to be asked
  • Handle the restaurant independently during your shift
  • Close the restaurant and leave the house ready for the next day

We’re looking for someone who

  • Is genuinely comfortable working alone and being responsible for the whole room
  • Genuinely enjoys people and is naturally helpful
  • Has good hospitality instincts and can make thoughtful accommodations for guests
  • Can stay calm, organized, and attentive when several things are happening at once
  • Is reliable and takes commitments seriously
  • Communicates clearly and respectfully
  • Is observant and good at following recipes, systems, and instructions
  • Takes pride in keeping a space clean and cared for
  • Can assemble and plate food beautifully – we’ll teach you our methods
  • Doesn’t mind getting their hands dirty; hospitality is hands-on work
  • Is emotionally mature, receptive to feedback, and willing to learn

This role requires independence and consistency. We are looking for someone who will show up when they say they will, take ownership of their shift, and understand that the small things matter.

Schedule

Sunday–Wednesday evenings

We are looking for someone who can commit to at least one consistent evening per week. After training, there is flexibility to work as little as one evening a week.

Our ideal person may already have a daytime job and be looking for a second, more human and hands-on place to spend part of their week.

Maya is a small neighborhood restaurant built around food, tea, congee, conversation, and care. We care deeply about hospitality, but hospitality here is also real work: setting up, serving, cleaning, paying attention, and taking care of the house from beginning to end.

If that sounds like the kind of work you enjoy, we’d love to hear from you.

Location: Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn
Schedule: Sunday–Wednesday evenings
Hours: 5-hour shifts

To apply: Please send your name, a little about yourself, your current work or daytime commitments, your availability, and why this role interests you to mayacongeecafe@gmail.com.

Lunch on weekends is busy, quick, and hands-on. We are looking for people who like the rhythm of a full room and can move with purpose while still taking care of people.

Depending on your strengths, the work may include:

  • Greeting and seating guests
  • Taking orders at the counter
  • Running food and drinks
  • Assembling congee bowls and sandwiches
  • Light food preparations
  • Clearing and resetting tables
  • Helping with dishes and general restaurant upkeep

  • Fast on their feet
  • Warm and attentive
  • Reliable
  • Comfortable working as part of a small team

  • Naturally aware of what needs to happen next

You don’t need to know everything on your first day. We can teach you our food and our way of doing things. What matters most is your attitude, reliability, and willingness to learn.

If you like busy neighborhood restaurants, good food, and working with people, we’d like to hear from you.
